Software Agents and Workflows for Systems Interoperability In recent years, there is a great recognition and interest in cooperative systems among researchers in academia and industry as well as by practitioners in many organizations and businesses. An important feature of these systems is the ability to interact and to integrate their functionalities, and hence to perform collaborative operations, even if the initial intend was to perform as stand-alone systems. This feature is highly desirable in many application domains, such as virtual enterprises, electronic commerce, and web-based applications. In this context, interoperability becomes an essential characteristic of cooperative systems, especially in dealing with the distribution and heterogeneity nature of the environment. To enable and support interoperability effectively, a novel way of designing systems is required. One very promising approach is to integrate concepts and design principles from software agents and workflows. Software agents are attracting much attention for their autonomy, cooperative behavior, and lately mobility. Workflow is also emerging as an important area for the specification of a system functioning. A workflow involves the coordinated execution of multiple activities performed by different entities, such as software agents. The integration of software agents and workflows into a common framework provides an effective tool for systems interoperability and therefore, new research perspectives. Indeed, this exciting avenue is full of challenges and open problems. This workshop will focus on software agents and workflows applied to cooperative distributed and heterogeneous systems. Topics of interests include, but are not limited to:
Workshop Organizers Submission of papers Authors who wish to submit to the workshop should send either PostScript or PDF versions of their paper by email to the workshop organizers (see above), or else provide a URL for an online version of the paper. Hardcopy submission is discouraged. Submissions should be no more than 5000 words length. The first page of each submission should list the full contact details (including full name, postal address, email address, phone and fax number) of at least one author. Publication Accepted papers will be published in the Proceedings of CSCWD 2001 (CD-ROM version: ISBN: 0-660-18379-X). Authors of selected papers will be invited to submit revised and expanded versions of their papers to be considered for publication in a special issue of Computers in Industry on CSCW in Design and a special section in an issue of Communications of the ACM.
